Project 3
Light

Designing a non-denominational chapel for Farmingdale State College is the aim of this project. It should be a serene place where individuals of all religions can pray and think, according to the college. They think this can be accomplished by using light creatively. In order to create a beautiful and useful room that is ideal for worship and introspection, the design will manipulate light.

Renowned architect Louis Kahn made great efforts to optimize the use of natural light in the design of the Exeter Library. The expansive central atrium, which lets natural light flood the building's center, is one of its most remarkable characteristics. Tall, thin windows positioned thoughtfully around the outside walls encircle the study carrels and tiers of reading places that surround this center area. In addition to letting in a lot of natural light, these windows produce a rhythm of light and shadow that heightens the library's calm ambiance. Light is a crucial architectural component in Kahn's design, which carefully strikes a balance between practicality and an inspirational spatial experience.
